Chapter 40: The Sovereign's Physique

The liquid fire in Amutenya’s veins did not stop at his chest. It surged upward, clawing into his throat and behind his eyes, radiating down his spine until every nerve in his body felt like it was being submerged in boiling water.

His knees buckled. His iron-like grip on the wooden railing was the only thing keeping him from collapsing onto the balcony floor.

"My Lord!" Nande dropped his heavy stack of ledgers, the paper scattering across the wooden planks as he rushed forward.

"Amutenya!" Tuwilika screamed, her bureaucratic composure shattering as she reached for his shoulder.

"Do not... touch me," Amutenya ground out through gritted teeth. His voice didn't sound like his own; it resonated with a strange, heavy vibration that made both Nande and Tuwilika freeze in their tracks.

Amutenya’s mind raced. Up until this exact second, the System had only acted as a passive ledger—an administrative tool that recorded his population, unlocked technology trees, gamified his domain and alerted him of threats. It had never directly interacted with his physical biology, except for when he had willingly sacrificed his life force to open the Tech tree. This dominating presence reminded him of when he had first woken up in this era, that same helpless of having your life held by a powerful force.

Time seemed to dilate. Below them, the massive fourth wave of refugees was still crossing the boundary line, but to Amutenya, their movements slowed to an agonizing crawl. The blue interface that usually hovered politely in his peripheral vision was now dominating his entire field of view, scrolling with frantic, aggressive text.

Because he hadn't hoarded his wealth—because he had actually provided food, water, and security to his six thousand citizens—the System was rewarding him. The LSI surplus was converting into Excess Life-Force, and it was bleeding directly into his physical vessel. He was becoming more than a healthy cattle herder.

Suddenly, the burning sensation localized, snapping into his brain with the force of a physical blow.

The suffocating heat finally broke, leaving behind a profound, icy clarity.

Amutenya slowly straightened up, releasing his white-knuckled grip on the railing. The wood groaned—his fingers had literally crushed deep indentations into the solid mopane timber.

He took a slow, deep breath. His physical vessel, which had previously just been the body of a somewhat healthy cattle herder, now felt impossibly dense, grounded, and terrifyingly lethal. He could feel the raw, superhuman power thrumming just beneath his skin.

But the System wasn't finished. With the physical upgrade complete, the Level 2 population threshold triggered its software patch.

A sudden, invisible tether snapped into place within Amutenya’s mind. It felt like a pristine Bluetooth connection. When he looked at Nande and Tuwilika, he didn't just see his exhausted aides; he felt their absolute, unshakeable devotion to him. He realized, with a shock of corporate elation, that he could now directly transfer his modern knowledge packets—logistics, mathematics, structural engineering—straight into their minds, bypassing months of tedious verbal explanations.

"My Lord?" Nande whispered, taking a cautious step back. Nande flinched, instinctively sensing the change.

There was no glowing aura emanating from Amutenya, but the sheer presence of the boy had fundamentally shifted. His posture was perfectly, unnaturally aligned. His dark eyes held the heavy, oppressive weight of a true apex predator. He didn't just look like a warlord anymore; he looked like a sovereign whose authority was written into his very DNA.

"I am fine, Nande," Amutenya said. His voice was smooth, resonant, and effortlessly commanding. "The growing pains of our expansion simply caught up with me."

Tuwilika swallowed hard, visibly struggling to maintain eye contact with him. "The... the fourth wave is crossing the perimeter, My Lord. Mandume and Weyulu are already helping with organizing the intake, but the numbers are beyond anything we have processed. The HR department will need three days just to assign them basic points."

Amutenya looked back over the balcony. More than five thousand people were now standing within the borders of his domain. The village-base had officially outgrown its crude, temporary identity.

"Tuwilika," Amutenya commanded, his eyes scanning the horizon where the sun was beginning to set over the sprawling sea of humanity. "Draft a new decree. Inform Hedimbi to cast a new iron plaque for the main boundary road."

"What should it say, My Lord?" she asked, quickly retrieving a pencil from her pouch.

"We are no longer a village, and we are no longer a base," Amutenya declared, his voice carrying the absolute certainty of his newly forged physique. "From this day forward, this territory is officially designated as the City-State of Guardianship. Let the factories speed up recruitment and triple their output, we need to expand. By the end of the drought, I want all the previous separate villages around us included in our development. I want a wall built surrounding our City-State."
