Chapter 1: death by porcelain, rebirth by dust
The first thing Thomas registered wasn’t the blue holographic screen flashing in his eyes. It was the smell. It was an overwhelming, inescapable mix of dry earth, woodsmoke, and a massive amount of fresh cow dung.
He coughed, his lungs burning as he violently inhaled a mouthful of dust.

Thomas stared blankly at the glowing blue text floating in mid-air, right in front of his face. He blinked. The text stayed perfectly tracked to his vision.
"What the..." he muttered, his voice sounding completely different it was deeper, raspier, and speaking a dialect of Oshiwambo he technically shouldn't have known this fluently.
Then, the memories hit him. Two completely different lifetimes collided in his brain like a high-speed train wreck.
First came his own past. He remembered the modern world. He remembered his tiny apartment. And, with a sudden, agonizing wave of humiliation, he remembered exactly how he had died. He had been sitting on the porcelain throne, hiding from his responsibilities, intensely focused on a mobile kingdom-building strategy game. His hands had been sweaty. The phone had slipped. It plunged straight into the bowl. In a blind, panicked reflex, he had reached down into the water just as the cheap, faulty charging cable frayed against the plumbing.
ZAP!
Dead.
Electrocuted on the toilet.
"Are you kidding me?!" Thomas yelled at the sky, his hands flying to his head. "Of all the ways to go out! A legendary warrior gets a spear to the chest. A regular guy gets a peaceful sleep. I get taken out by a wet iPhone?!"
But as he clutched his head, the second wave of memories flooded in, the memories of Amutenya, a nineteen-year-old cattle herder living in the pre-colonial era of the north. He felt Amutenya’s deep reverence for the sacred fire, the calloused texture of a herding staff, and the exhausting weight of guarding the royal cattle under a blazing sun.
Amutenya had passed out from a sudden, violent fever just minutes ago. Now, Thomas was in the driver's seat.
He looked down at himself. His modern clothes were gone. He was wearing a traditional leather loincloth, his skin was a deep, sun-baked brown, and he was holding a polished wooden walking staff.
"Okay, okay, calm down," Thomas whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "It’s a dream. Or Witchcraft? Oh! My enemies have succeeded!!"
As if rushing to cut off his ridiculous thoughts, the blue screen in his mind glitched, minimizing to the top right corner of his vision like a battery icon. A massive red notification banner popped up to replace it:
[CRITICAL SYSTEM WARNING]
[TIMELINE DETECTED: Circa 1850s]
[COUNTDOWN TO FOREIGN CONQUEST: 20 Years]
[MAIN QUEST: Elevate the local civilization level to withstand Global Superpowers.]
[HARD DRIVE CONDITION: Your life-force is tethered to the local population. Current Community Population: 1,200. If population reaches 0, Host will be Permanently Deleted.]
Thomas stared at the word Deleted. It was pulsing a angry, neon red.
"Twenty years?!" Thomas groaned, throwing his hands up in absolute despair. "You give me a kingdom-building prompt, but instead of starting in a cozy fantasy world with elves, you drop me right before the freaking colonial scramble?! No guns, no steel mills, no concrete, and I have two decades to turn a bunch of cattle herders into a military force capable of fighting European empires?!"
He looked up at the vast, cloudless blue sky, the midday sun beating down ruthlessly on his bare shoulders.
"Hey! Whichever god, spirit, or algorithm did this to me—you have terrible taste!" he screamed at the empty air. "You couldn't have dropped me in ancient Rome? Or at least given me a sword? I’m a gamer! I used WASD keys! What am I supposed to do with a stick and twenty years of historical hindsight?!"
"Amutenya?"
A timid voice broke through his rant. Thomas spun around, his herding staff swinging wildly. Standing a few feet away, looking at him with wide, terrified eyes, was a younger boy, no older than fourteen, holding a smaller stick and smeared with dust.
"Amutenya... who are you shouting at?" the boy asked, taking a step back. "And why are your eyes glowing like a firefly?"
Thomas froze. He realized a faint, bright white light was beaming directly out of his pupils—the phone’s default flashlight app, triggered by his sheer panic.
He quickly thought, Turn off, turn off, turn off! and the light vanished, returning his vision to normal.
"I... uh..." Thomas stammered, Amutenya’s memories quickly identifying the boy as Shivute, his younger cousin. "I was just... praying. To the ancestors. Loudly."
Shivute didn't look convinced, but the terror on his face quickly shifted to pure panic. He pointed a trembling finger toward the acacia trees behind them, where the royal herd was resting.
"You need to come look at the King's alpha bull," Shivute cried, his voice cracking. "It just collapsed. Blood is coming from its nose. If the royal herd dies on our watch, the King will have our heads before sunset!"
The moment the boy finished speaking, a loud PING! echoed directly inside Thomas’s skull.
[NEW QUEST CHOSEN: 'The First Plague']
[OBJECTIVE: Diagnose and cure the King's bull before the infection spreads to the village water supply.]
[REWARD: Unlock 'Notes App' & +5% Community Stability.]
[FAILURE: Community Population drops by 40%. Host life-force degrades.]
Thomas looked at the crying boy, then at the pulsing red warning screen in his eyes. He let out one final, heavy curse at the universe, gripped his wooden staff, and braced himself.
"Lead the way, Shivute," Thomas said, his gamer brain finally kicking into survival mode. Let's go scan a cow.
