Chapter 3: [Data Search] The Offline Wikipedia Strategy
"What do you mean a stick won't fix it? Was a stick ever going to fix this?!" Shivute yelled down from the safety of the branch, his voice trembling. "Amutenya, look at him! He’s failing!"
Thomas looked back at the clearing. The alpha bull’s legs were buckling again, its massive chest heaving as it let out a weak, agonizing groan. The digital countdown in Thomas’s vision was remorseless:
[00:11:04 remaining until Cardiovascular Collapse]
"Shivute, stay in that tree and watch the herd," Thomas ordered, his voice snapping with a command authority he didn't know he possessed. "If anyone comes, scream. Loudly."
Without waiting for an answer, Thomas sprinted into the deeper brush, away from the dust and the frantic lowing of the cattle. He needed silence. He needed to think.
He slid behind the thick trunk of a baobab tree and collapsed into a crouch. He closed his eyes, plunging his mind into the digital matrix of his own brain.
"System, open the search engine", he thought aggressively. "Look up 'Omuvango Leaf Extract'. Give me an antidote. Fast!"
The blue screen flashed, a loading circle spinning in his mind's eye.

[MATCH FOUND: Omuvango (Spirostachys africana / Tamboti tree)]
[TOXICOLOGY: Contains highly toxic diterpenes. Causes severe gastrointestinal hemorrhaging, respiratory distress, and cardiac arrest in livestock if ingested in large quantities.]
"I don't need a biology lesson!" Thomas shouted in his head. "Show me the cure! How do I stop it?!"
He swiped his hand through the air—a useless physical habit from his modern life—but his brain interface responded, scrolling down the digital text at lightning speed.
[ANTIDOTE / TREATMENT:
1. Immediate administration of activated charcoal to bind toxins.
2. High doses of tannin-rich botanical solutions to neutralize alkaloids.
3. Local Botanical Alternative: Extract from the roots of Omumborombonga (Combretum imberbe / Leadwood tree), specifically when boiled with fresh river mud rich in calcium carbonates.]
Thomas snapped his eyes open. Omumborombonga. The Leadwood tree. Thanks to Amutenya’s ancestral knowledge, he knew exactly what that tree looked like—its wood was so dense it didn't float, and its bark looked like the cracked skin of a crocodile.
"There's a grove of them," Thomas whispered, his eyes darting toward the eastern horizon. "Down by the river bend."
But the moment the word river left his mouth, a cold knot formed in his stomach. The river bend was a disputed border zone. The clans to the east, under a rival sub-chief, had been friction-testing the King’s borders for months. Walking down there at dusk was practically begging to be ambushed by a scouting party.
Worse, the red notification banner at the bottom of his vision began to pulse, changing its numbers in real time:
[COMMUNITY POPULATION ALERT]
[Current Population: 1,200]
[PROJECTION: If Royal Alpha Bull dies ➔ Royal Guard Execution Protocol initiated ➔ Faction Stability Drops ➔ Population Collapse Risk: High.]
"No pressure, then," Thomas muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead.
He ran back to the clearing. The bull was down on its side now, its breathing shallow, a dark pool of blood staining the sand beneath its muzzle. Shivute was weeping openly in the tree.
"Shivute! Get down here!" Thomas barked.
The boy slid down the bark, nearly tripping over his own feet. "Amutenya, it’s over. We should just turn ourselves in, maybe the king won't hold our family accountable!"
"We aren't running. Grab your digging stick and the extra leather waterskin," Thomas said, grabbing his own herding staff from the dirt. "We are going to the river bend. We need Leadwood roots and river mud."
Shivute’s face went completely pale under the dust. "The river? At dark? But the eastern raiders—"
"If we stay here, the King’s guards will kill us by sunset anyway," Thomas interrupted, gripping the boy’s shoulder. "Trust me, Shivute. I had a vision from the... the great ancestor. We can save the bull. Move!"
Driven by sheer terror of the King, Shivute nodded and ran to grab the supplies.
Ten minutes later, the two boys were crouching in the high, golden reeds lining the banks of the Kunene river. The sun had completely dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of purple and bruised orange. The river flowed thick and silent, like liquid glass.
"There," Thomas whispered, pointing to a gnarled, ancient tree hanging low over the water. Its roots broke through the muddy bank like skeletal fingers.
They crept forward, sinking ankle-deep into the cold, thick river mud. Thomas dropped to his knees, using his bare hands to claw at the earth around a thick, pale root, while Shivute desperately scooped the gray, mineral-rich mud into the leather waterskin.
Just a little more, Thomas thought, his fingernails tearing against the rough earth. I just need enough to boil into a mash.
Suddenly, a strange sound echoed over the gentle lapping of the water.
Plop. Plop. Plop.
It wasn't a fish. It was the sound of a heavy substance breaking the surface of the water, coming from just twenty yards upstream, hidden behind a thick patch of papyrus reeds.
Thomas froze. He looked at Shivute, pressing a finger to his lips.
Using the high reeds as cover, Thomas crawled forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He parted the fronds gently, squinting into the deepening twilight.
His eyes widened.
A lone man was standing on a flat rock extending into the river. He wasn't wearing the traditional ornaments of their clan. He wore the dark, grease-stained leather of the eastern tribes. In his hands, he held a large, woven basket, and he was systematically dumping a foul-smelling, dark green powder directly into the slow-moving current—right where the village’s primary drinking water intake was located.
Before Thomas could even process the sight, a sharp, digital tone rang out inside his skull, nearly making him jump out of his skin.
[SYSTEM ALERT: ENEMY ACTION DETECTED]
[EVENT: 'The Poisoned Well']
[WARNING: Contaminant Omuvango entering public water supply. Time to total contamination: 8 Minutes.]
[PROJECTED CASUALTIES: 450+ villagers.]
[HOST EXISTENCE PROBABILITY: DROPPING TO 15%]
Thomas stared at the flashing screen. The saboteur wasn't just trying to kill the King's bull to get two herders executed.
He was trying to wipe out the entire village.
