Chapter 5: [Quest Complete] Level Up and Patch Notes
"Move!" Thomas barked, shoving the bound saboteur forward.
The eastern spy stumbled through the brush, his ankles tied loosely with thick, fibrous river vines. Shivute followed closely behind, carrying the heavy leather waterskin slung over his shoulder, his eyes wide as he watched Thomas.
The digital countdown in Thomas’s vision was bleeding down to its final seconds, pulsing a dangerous, neon orange.

They burst back into the grazing clearing. The scene was pure chaos. The royal guards had finally arrived, their long iron spears glinting under the rising moonlight. Two of them had their weapons pointed directly at the village elders, who were kneeling in the dirt, pleading for mercy.
In the center of the clearing, the King’s alpha bull lay completely still, its chest barely moving.
"Step away from the herd!" a towering guard captain roared, his voice like thunder as he spotted Thomas and Shivute emerging from the trees. He leveled his heavy spear at Thomas’s chest. "The King's beast has been stricken by witchcraft, and you herders are the only ones who—"
"Shut up and let me work!" Thomas screamed back.
The sheer audacity of a lowly, leather-clad herder yelling at a royal guard captain made the entire clearing drop into a stunned, breathless silence. Before the captain could recover his fury, Thomas threw the bound saboteur onto the dirt at the captain's feet.
"There's your witch," Thomas panted, pointing a muddy finger at the prisoner. "He’s an eastern spy. We caught him poisoning the village water supply and the royal feed with Omuvango leaves. Now, if you spear me, that bull dies, and you can explain to the King why his prize possession is dead."
The captain blinked, looking from the bound spy to Thomas, completely thrown off by the young man's bizarre, commanding rhetoric.
"Shivute, the mud! Now!" Thomas ordered.
With thirty seconds left on his internal clock, Thomas dropped to his knees beside the dying bull. He snatched the pale, gnarled Leadwood roots from his belt and mashed them violently against a flat stone, mixing the crushed fiber directly with the calcium-rich gray river mud Shivute poured out. It formed a thick, gritty paste.
Thomas pried open the bull's heavy, foaming jaws. The beast didn't even have the strength to fight him off.
"Come on, eat it," Thomas muttered, shoving the herbal, muddy mash deep into the back of the bull’s throat. He massaged the animal’s massive neck, forcing its throat muscles to swallow the primitive antidote.
The digital timer hit zero.

For five long, agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The bull lay completely limp. The guard captain stepped forward, his face darkening as he raised his spear. "You have played with the royal guard, boy. Now you pay—"
GASP!
The alpha bull suddenly violently shuddered. It let out a massive, explosive snort, spraying a mixture of black blood and gray mud all over Thomas’s chest. Its powerful legs kicked out, catching the dirt as its chest began to heave with deep, clean drafts of oxygen. The dark, bubbling discharge from its nose completely stopped.
With a heavy grunt, the massive six-hundred-kilogram beast rolled onto its belly, shaking its gnarled horns as it looked around the clearing, completely alert.
A deafening, triumphant golden chime exploded directly inside Thomas's skull, so loud he thought his ears would bleed. The dark night sky seemed to vanish as massive, radiant lines of golden digital text scrolled down his field of vision.

Thomas sat back in the dirt, completely covered in cow mud and sweat, staring blankly at the glorious, flashing reward screen. He let out a breathless, euphoric laugh.
The village elders were staring at him as if he were a god. The guard captain slowly lowered his spear, looking at the miraculously revived bull, then at the bound eastern spy who was currently weeping and confessing to everything.
"You..." the captain breathed, looking at Thomas with a profound newfound respect. "You saved the King’s pride. And you uncovered a declaration of war from the east. What is your name, boy?"
Thomas wiped a smear of mud from his forehead, his gamer brain already analyzing the new apps compiling in the corner of his eye. The 'Notes' app was humming, ready to store strategies, and the 'Calculator' was already projecting population growth metrics. The countdown to the colonial scramble was still ticking, but for the first time, he felt a surge of pure, unadulterated confidence.
He stood up straight, planting his hands on his hips.
"My name is Amutenya," Thomas said, his voice echoing clearly across the clearing. "And we have a lot of work to do."
