Chapter 22: Water in the Desert (Part 2)

For the next three hours, Amutenya, Ndapandula, and Shiimi moved like specters through the harsh scrubland, systematically targeting the weakest, most desperate camps in their grid.

The strategy was flawless. The moment these isolated hunters laid eyes on Amutenya, their lingering paranoia vanished under the crushing weight of their own hunger. He wasn't a conqueror coming to annex their hunting grids; he was a lifeline.

They found the next camp huddled near a dried-up riverbed. Eight men, chewing on the boiled leather of their own worn-out pouches just to put something in their stomachs. Amutenya made the same offer and Ndapandula gave them a few stale pearl millet breads to fill their stomachs. The response was the same instantaneous, desperate submission.

Amutenya sent them directly back to his camp to eat and rest up.

Further east, they intercepted a larger group of fifteen men trying to drag the rotting carcass of a young giraffe through the brush. They were exhausted, heavily dehydrated, and fully aware they would likely die before making it out of the grid. When Amutenya promised them full bellies and medication for the wounded, their leader wept openly into the dust.

By the time the midday heat began to bake the earth, Amutenya had recruited a total of thirty-six hardened, desperate men.

When he, Ndapandula, and Shiimi finally circled back to their own camp, the transformation was staggering.

The clearing was buzzing with controlled, purposeful activity. The starving stragglers they had sent back were no longer hollow-eyed beggars. They were sitting by the fires, eating generous portions of Oshifima and hot warthog offal. In the center of the camp, Nelao and Kapandu were instructing a group of the new men on how to heavily coat their salvaged meat with alkaline mopane ash, saving what little they had brought with them. Ndapandula immediately tracked down the injured men to start treating their injuries.

Near the carts, Meme Kauna and Ndilimeke were working with blistering speed. They were tying the freshly cut, double-layered hide breastplates over the chests of the recruits and handing out thick, rigid bucklers made of stretched skin and acacia wood.

The men looked like real soldiers now. The food had restored their physical energy, but the armor and the sheer presence of Amutenya's wealth had restored their pride. They belonged to something larger than themselves.

Tate Shaningwa strode back into camp a few moments later, his massive spear resting lazily on his shoulder. He grinned at Amutenya. "The royals are staying by their fires today. They have no interest in bleeding over our wealth. And I picked up a family of four stragglers who were smart enough to run while they had the chance. A father and his three sons."

"Good," Amutenya said, his eyes scanning his newly forged, forty-man legion. They were armed, fed, and armored in thick hides. His first official army.

A rustle in the brush drew their attention. Shivute, Kadhila, and Nangolo materialized from the scrub, their chests heaving with exertion but their eyes burning with adrenaline.

"We found them," Shivute reported, jogging up to Amutenya. He grabbed a gourd and took a massive swig of water. "Three separate camps, but they are packing up their gear and converging toward the northern ridge. About fifty men in total. They are carrying heavy clubs, throwing sticks, and a few rusted iron spears. I think they are setting a trap for us on the road out."

Amutenya’s expression hardened into a mask of pure, tactical ice. He looked at the forty newly recruited men who had just sworn their lives to him. He looked at Shaningwa, Mukoya, and his core team.

"They think they are the hunters," Amutenya said, his voice carrying across the entire camp, ringing with deadly promise. "Let them unite, it makes it easier for us to take them all out. We strike at midnight, so eat up, make sure you get your gear and rest up."
