Chapter 44: The Great Earthworks (Part 1)
The next morning, the City-State of Guardianship woke to a sound it had heard before: the deafening, synchronized roar of mass mobilization.
Standing on the reinforced mud-brick battlements of the 1st County’s northern wall, Amutenya watched the great migration pour out of the gates. It was a breathtaking logistical triumph. Over four thousand able-bodied citizens, refugees, and integrated Scavengers moved with corporate precision.
At the head of the colossal column were the beasts of burden. Three hundred massive, muscle-bound oxen snorted in the crisp dawn air, hitched in pairs to heavy, Hedimbi-forged iron earth-movers. Behind them trailed the five hundred sturdy donkeys, hauling convoys of flatbed carts loaded with lumber, bricks, and the essential mobile kitchens that would feed the army of laborers.
"She actually pulled it off," Amutenya murmured, a smile touching his lips as he watched Tuwilika riding a gray mare alongside the column.
The Head of Human Resources had not slept. True to her word, Tuwilika had completely overhauled the labor force overnight. She had divided the thousands of workers into six massive brigades—one for each of the new counties. To prevent chaos, each brigade carried a dyed textile banner strapped to tall poles, color-coded for their specific zone.
Even the Vanguard and the newly integrated recruits were in the mix. Stripped to their waists, their heavy iron spears set aside, the soldiers worked in rotating security and labor shifts. They formed the muscular backbone of the heavy lifting crews, ensuring that the civilian workers were protected while maximizing raw physical output.
Amutenya climbed down from the wall and mounted Ash, riding out to catch up with the vanguard of the 2nd County brigade.
Two miles east of the city walls, Tangeni was already in his element. The young Chief Engineer stood at the edge of the slight depression Amutenya had mapped the day before, waving a rolled-up sheet of boiled paper at a crew of foremen.
"Drive the anchor spikes here!" Tangeni shouted over the lowing of the oxen. "We need the main canal trench ten feet wide and five feet deep before we crack the aquifer! Connect the earth-movers in a wedge formation!"
At Tangeni’s signal, a team of drivers cracked their long leather whips. Dozens of oxen surged forward, their massive shoulders straining against the yokes. The heavy iron plows bit deeply into the dry, sun-baked crust of the wasteland.
CRACK.
The sound of the earth splitting open echoed across the plains. As the oxen drove forward, massive chunks of dirt were churned up and pushed aside, instantly carving a perfectly straight, ten-foot-wide trench. What would have taken hundreds of men with bone hoes a week to accomplish was done in minutes by the sheer mechanical advantage of iron and beast.
Behind the plows, hundreds of workers swarmed the trench with iron shovels and pickaxes, clearing the loose debris, smoothing the canal walls, and laying the initial foundation trenches for the residential blocks.
Amutenya watched the hive of activity from a slight ridge, the morning sun warming his back. The transition from a desperate tribal survival camp to a true, industrialized city-state was happening right before his eyes.
Suddenly, a sharp, electric hum vibrated at the base of his skull.
The world around him dimmed slightly as a translucent, glowing blue holographic screen snapped into his field of vision. It had been months since the smartphone fused to his brain had delivered a major update.
[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]
[OS UPDATE CHECKING...]
Amutenya’s eyes tracked the text as it scrolled rapidly across his retinas.
[MILESTONE REACHED: MASS TERRAFORMING INITIATED
Host has successfully deployed advanced agricultural zoning, heavy iron draft technology, and mobilized a labor force exceeding 4,000 units.]
[MILESTONE REACHED: FIAT ECONOMY ESTABLISHED
Host has successfully transitioned the local populace from a primitive barter system to a centralized fiat currency. Economic velocity metrics indicate rapid upcoming growth.]
[UPGRADING OS... V2.0 – 'THE IRON FOUNDATION']
[UNLOCKING TECH TREE: TIER 3]
Amutenya’s breath caught in his throat. Tier 2 had given him the water wheel, modern crop rotation, and basic metallurgy. If the system was unlocking Tier 3, the technological leap was going to be massive.
The screen blinked, generating a new list of accessible offline Wikipedia caches and schematic blueprints directly into his frontal lobe.
[TIER 3 DOMAINS UNLOCKED:]
[Civil Engineering: Advanced aqueducts, multi-story brick architecture, basic mortar and cement formulation.
Basic Chemistry: Soap making (lye synthesis), simple distillation, and saltpeter extraction.
Advanced Metallurgy: Blast furnace schematics, steel-tempering processes.]
Amutenya closed his eyes, letting the influx of new data settle into his mind. He could already see the formulas for limestone mortar and the exact blueprints for a proper blast furnace burning themselves into his memory.
He opened his eyes, staring out at the six massive dust clouds rising across the scrubland where his people were carving out their future. They were digging the trenches for water today, but with this new knowledge, they wouldn't just be building mud-brick huts when they finished.
They were going to build an empire of stone and steel.
