Chapter 47: The Weight of the Gavel (Part 1)

Amutenya stood on the battlements of the 1st County’s perimeter wall, watching a massive cloud of dust rise on the northern horizon. The royal procession had arrived.

He did not look surprised. In fact, things were proceeding exactly according to his design.

Amutenya had not provoked the local town governor out of petty annoyance. It had been a highly calculated opening move. Months prior, Amutenya had noticed a strange anomaly within his private System interface. The metrics tracking the population bound to his domain had been fluctuating, yet the System had issued no penalties for the instability. It was a glaring tell that the central authority of the kingdom was fracturing.

To confirm his suspicions, Amutenya had dispatched Kadhila, directly into the capital.

Kadhila’s report had been highly revealing. The eastern borders were burning under the weight of the Kwambi raiders, and the royal harem was bleeding the treasury dry. King Mwaala was completely paralyzed, trapped in a cage of his own court’s making.

Knowing this, Amutenya had deliberately left a trail of breadcrumbs for the royal envoy to find. He wanted the King to know how powerful the City-State was becoming.

King Mwaala was a cynical survivor of court intrigue. Amutenya knew the King had forgotten a crucial reality of the scrubland: the common people still held an inherent, almost religious reverence for the royal court. If Amutenya simply declared himself an independent rebel king, he would face decades of resistance from loyalist peasants and neighboring lords. Mwaala’s attempt to "contain" him with a royal title was intended to kill the awe of the masses.

But Amutenya didn't want a small, isolated rebel paradise. He intended to dominate the entire Namibian terrain and stretch his grip down through the Portuguese ports of Angola. To do that without triggering a massive, unified holy war against himself, he needed legitimate authority.

King Mwaala had just hand-delivered it to him.

The heavy iron gates of the City-State groaned open. The royal procession marched through, their silk banners snapping in the dry wind. Fifty elite capital guards escorted a convoy of horse-drawn carriages bearing chests of gold, fine northern silks, and the King's personal seal.

At the head of the procession rode the royal envoy, no longer dressed as a ragged grain merchant, but wearing the crisp, authoritative robes of the inner court.

Amutenya met them in the central plaza of the 4th District. Thousands of his citizens gathered around, their eyes wide with awe at the sight of the King's colors.

Amutenya did not stand tall and defiant like a conqueror. Instead, he stepped forward and bowed deeply, playing the role of the dutiful, loyal minister to absolute perfection.

"The Crown acknowledges the miraculous work done in the southern scrubland," the envoy declared, his voice carrying over the silent, enraptured crowd. He unrolled the wax-sealed parchment. "For your tireless efforts in securing a sanctuary for the King's people during this great famine, King Mwaala bestows upon you the hereditary title: Lord of the Southern Reaches. You act in His Majesty's name."

A ripple of profound awe swept through the citizens. To them, Amutenya was no longer just a brilliant leader; he was the King's chosen hand.

Amutenya stepped forward and accepted the scroll with both hands, his face a mask of solemn gratitude. "I am but a humble servant of the Crown," Amutenya projected loudly, ensuring every peasant heard his devotion. "I accept this burden to bring order to His Majesty's lands."

The envoy offered a tight, knowing smile, believing the trap had been successfully sprung.

"And as my first official act as Lord of the Southern Reaches," Amutenya continued, his voice suddenly hardening. He turned to face his Vanguard commanders, who were standing in full iron armor at the edge of the plaza. "It is my sworn duty to protect the Crown’s peace. The neighboring town governor has proven entirely incompetent. He unlawfully attacked a royal project, lost his men, and left his borders vulnerable."

The envoy’s smile instantly vanished. A cold dread replaced it.

"Commander," Amutenya ordered, his voice echoing off the brick walls of the administrative hub. "Deploy two hundred Vanguard troops north immediately. We are annexing the governor’s town under my direct administration. It will be fortified and garrisoned as a buffer zone to protect the King's southern interests."

The envoy opened his mouth to protest, but the words died in his throat. What could he say? Amutenya was using the exact power the King had just given him. It was a perfectly legal, unquestionable maneuver.

"Yes, My Lord!" the Vanguard commanders roared in unison.

Amutenya looked back at the pale royal envoy, offering a polite, chilling smile. He had just stolen a town right in front of the King's own spy, and the Crown was going to have to thank him for it.
